Over 110% revenue increase from Adsense Custom Search Ads

I've now tested AdSense Custom Search Ads thoroughly and are very pleased with the results.

The biggest effect we have seen is with Jobblediga.se has now gone up 111% in RPM (revenue per thousand sidvidningar) compared to before I began to optimize and use AdSense Custom Search Ads. Now I'd probably be able to increase some by simply replacing the standard ad formats, but not this much. On Gnosan.se we se that it have risen 97%.

I tested myself to what I think is the optimal number of ads, which of course depends on the site and how many / how you want your ads. I had an ad box on the search result, one during and one sidebar. The under and over each 728px wide and side bar was 160 wide. I then tested with 1-5 ads in each ad box and compared with the corresponding results for Adsense for Content 728 * 90 160 * 600 banner advertising. The result was that if we had only 1-2 ads per square became the RPM lower compared with Adsense for content, but for three, four and five ads were higher. A maximum was five ads. Since RPM: one determined by the CTR and CPC, and more ads will be more CTR, but may lower the CPC, so I tried to vary with different number of ads in ad boxes. Since the ad box above result is the one that generates the most money, so I let it be five ads, while I ranged it under and side bar from 0 to 5 ads. I then got the result to 3-5 ads showed most but it was not much difference between them (5 ads gave a little better CTR but low CPC, so it evens out). I thought the three were the best in the second ad boxes for it not to be too much ads.

So my conclusion is that the optimum is an ad box at the top with five ads and then three ads in the sidebar and that. However, one must remember that unlike the Adsense for content, so it will appear only go if there are relevant ads, that is, it does not fill with anything. That is, there is only 2pc relevant ads so they are shown in the top ad box, while the others are empty. This may also have the effect that there are no ads at all on your side, for there is no relevant ad. But on the whole it appears that almost all ads, so you earn is always to use AdSense Custom Search Ads just optimizing your ad (show enough ads).

Other things I learned is that when measuring Adsense channels for AdSense Custom Search Ads, so they must be created during the search network> Custom channels, as this is a search engine and not ordinary Adsense for content. And that if we want to measure more channels in the same ad box (such as a Top Ad and a total for the top ad) so does it with a + sign between the channels:

Although AdSense Custom Search Ads are good in many ways, there is one thing that bothers me on and that is a disadvantage. It is that you can not link it earned in Adsense for Search channel with Analytics, so you can see what a specific page has been generated. Which you can easily with Adsense for content. There might be some hidden way to solve this, but I have not found it. Adsense account is already linked to Analytics.

28 Ways to Make Money with Your Website

There are several lists with “ways to make money with a website” on the Internet, but none of them seem to be complete. That is why I decided to create this one. If you know a method that is not listed below, just let us know and we’ll update it.

Notice that ways to make money with a website are different from ways to make more money from it. Methods to increase your traffic or click-through rate will help you make more money, but they do not represent a method of making money per se.

For example, one could suggest that blending AdSense ads with the content is a way to make money from a website. In reality it’s not; it’s just a way to make more money by improving your ad click-through rate. The real monetization method behind it is a PPC ad network.

The list is divided into direct and indirect methods, and examples and links are provided for each point. Enjoy!

Direct Methods

1. PPC Advertising Networks

Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.

The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click).

The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads.

2. CPM Advertising Networks

CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions.

A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly.

CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM.

You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on).

3. Direct Banner Advertising

Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments.

4. Text Link Ads

After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular.

Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not.

The advantage of this method is that it is not intrusive. One can sell text links directly through his website or use specialized networks like Text-Link-Ads and Text-Link-Brokers to automate the process.

5. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a very popular practice on the Internet. Under this system you have a merchant that is willing to let other people (the affiliates) sell directly or indirectly its products and services, in exchange for a commission. Sometimes this type of advertising is also called CPA (cost per action) or CPL (cost per lead) based.

Affiliates can send potential customers to the merchant using several tools, from banners to text links and product reviews.

In order to find suitable affiliate programs you can turn to individual companies and publishers like Dreamhost and SEOBook, or join affiliate marketplaces and networks.

6. Monetization Widgets

The latest trend on the web are widgets that let you monetize your website. Examples include Widgetbucks and SmartLinks. Some of these services operate under a PPC scheme, others behave like text link ads, others yet leverage affiliate links.

Their main differentiator, however, is the fact that they work as web widgets, making it easier for the user to plug and play the service on its website.

7. Sponsored Reviews

PayPerPost pioneered this model, with much controversy on the beginning (related to the fact that they did not require disclosure on paid posts). Soon other companies followed, most notably Sponsored Reviews and ReviewMe, refining the process and expanding the paid blogging model.

Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it.

If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman.

8. RSS Feed Ads

With the quick adoption of the RSS technology by millions of Internet users, website owners are starting to find ways to monetize this new content distribution channel.

Feedburber already has its own publisher network, and you can sign-up to start displaying CPM based advertising on your feed footer. Bidvertiser recently introduced a RSS feed ad option as well, with a PPC scheme.

Finally, some blogs are also opting to sell banners or sponsored messages on their feed directly. John Chow and Marketing Pilgrim are two examples.

9. Sponsors for Single Columns or Events

If you website has specific columns or events (e.g., a weekly podcast, an interview series, a monthly survey, a special project) you could find companies to sponsor them individually.

This method increases the monetization options for website owner, while giving advertisers the possibility to target a more specific audience and with a reduced commitment.

Mashable illustrates the case well. They have several advertising options on the site, including the possibility to sponsor specific columns and articles, including the “Daily Poll” and the “Web 2.0 Invites.”

Problogger also runs group writing projects occasionally, and before proceeding he publicly announce the project asking for sponsors.

10.Premium Content

Some websites and blogs give away part of their content for free, and charge for access to the premium content and exclusive tools.

SEOMoz is a good example. They have a very popular blog that gives advice and information on wide range of SEO related topics. On top of that visitors can decide to become premium members. It costs $48 monthly and it grants them access to guides, tools and other exclusive material.

11. Private Forums

While the Internet is populated with free forums, there is also the possibility to create a private one where members need to pay a single or recurring fee to join.

SEO Blackhat charges $100 monthly from its members, and they have thousands of them. Obviously in order to charge such a price for a forum membership you need to provide real value for the members (e.g., secret techniques, tools, and so on).

Performancing also launched a private forum recently, focused on the networking aspect. It is called The Hive, and the monthly cost is $10.

These are just two examples. There are many possibilities to create a private and profitable forum, you just need to find an appealing angle that will make it worth for the members.

12. Job Boards

All the popular blogs are trying to leverage job boards to make some extra income. Guy Kawasaki, ReadWriteWeb, Problogger… you name it.

Needless to say that in order to create an active and profitable job board you need first to have a blog focused on a specific niche, and a decent amount traffic.

The advantage of this method is that it is passive. Once you have the structure in place, the job listings will come naturally, and you can charge anywhere from $10 up to $100 for each.

13. Marketplaces

Sitepoint is the online marketplace by excellence. Some websites and blogs, however, are trying to replicate that model on a smaller scale.

Depending on your niche, a market place that allows your visitors to buy, sell and trade products could work well. Over the time you could start charging a small fee for new product listings.

The problem with this method is that there are no standard software on the web, so you would need to hire a coder to get a marketplace integrated into your website.

You can see an example of a marketplaces being used on EasyWordpress and on Mashable.

14. Paid Surveys and Polls

There are services that will pay you money to run a small survey or poll on your website. The most popular one is called Vizu Answers.

Basically you need to sign up with them, and select the kind of polls that you want to run your site. Most of these services operate under a CPM model.

15. Selling or Renting Internal Pages

Million Dollar Wiki made this concept popular, but it was being used on the web for a long time around (check Pagerank10.co.uk for instance).

These websites sell for a single fee or rent for a recurring fee internal pages on their domain. Usually they have either high Pagerak or high traffic, so that people purchasing a page will be able to benefit in some way.

Implementing this method on a small blog would be difficult, but the concept is interesting and could be explored further.

16. Highlighted Posts from Sponsors

Techmeme probably pioneered this idea, but somehow it has not spread to other websites. The tech news aggregator displays editorial posts on the left column, and on the sidebar they have a section titled “Techmeme Sponsor Posts.”

On that section posts from the blog of the advertisers get highlighted, sending qualified traffic their way. Considering that the monthly cost for one spot is $5000 and that they have around 6 sponsors at any given time, it must be working well.

17. Donations

Placing a “Donate” link or button on a website can be an efficient way to earn money, especially if your blog is on a niche where readers learn and gain value from your content.

Personal development and productivity blogs, for instance, tend to perform well with donation based systems (one good example being Steve Pavlina).

A small variation of this method appeared sometime ago with the Buy Me a Beer plugin. This WordPress plugin enables you to insert a customized message at the bottom of each article, asking the readers to chip in for a beer or coffee.

18. In-text Adverting

In-text adverting networks like Kontera and Vibrant Media will place sponsored links inside your text. These links come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links, and once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money.

Some people make good money with this method, but others refrain from using it due to its intrusiveness. It is also interesting to note that very few mainstream websites have experimented with in-text advertising.

19. Pop-ups and Pop-unders

Pop-ups are a common yet annoying form of advertising on the Internet. If you are just trying to make a much money as possible from your website, you could experiment with them.

If you are trying to grow the traffic and generate loyal visitors, however, you probably should stay away from them. Just consider the hundreds of pop-up blockers out there: there is a reason why they are so popular.

* Adversal

20. Audio Ads

Also called PPP (Pay Per Play), this advertising method was introduce by Net Audio Ads. the concept is pretty simple: play a small audio advertising (usually 5 seconds) every time a visitor enters into your website. The user should not be able to stop it, creating a 100% conversion rate based on unique visitors.

The company is still rolling tests, but some users are reporting to get from a $4 to a $6 CPM. Regardless of the pay rate, though, this is a very intrusive form of advertising, so think twice before using it.

21. Selling the Website

Selling your website could be your last resource, but it has the potential to generate a big sum of money in a short period of time.

Market places on online forums like DigitalPoint and Sitepoint are always active with website buyers and sellers. Keep in mind that they most used parameter to determine the value of a website is the monthly revenue that it generates, multiplied by a certain number (the multiplier can be anything from 5 to 30, depending on the expectations of the seller, on the quality of the site, on the niche and other factors).

Some people also make money trading and flipping websites. They either create them from scratch or buy existing ones, and after some revamping they sell them for a profit.

Indirect Methods

22. Selling an Ebook

Perhaps one of the oldest money making strategies on the web, using a website to promote a related ebook is a very efficient way to generate revenue.

You could either structure the website around the book itself, like SEOBook.com, or launch the ebook based on the success of the website, like FreelanceSwitch did we the book How to be a Rockstar Freelancer.

23. Selling a Hardcover Book

Many authors and journalists leverage their blogs or websites to sell copies of hardcover books. Examples include Guy Kawasaki, Seth Godin and Malcolm Gladwell.

While most of these people were already renowned authors before they created their website, one could also follow the other way around. Lorelle VanFossen did exactly that with her Blogging Tips book. First she built her authority on the subject via her blog, and afterwards she published the book.

24. Selling Templates or WordPress Themes

As more and more people decide to get an online presence, website templates and WordPress themes become hotter and hotter.

On this segment you have mainstream websites like TemplateMonster, as well as individual designers who decide to promote and sell their work independently.

Brian Gardner and Unique Blog Designs are two examples of websites that make money with the sales of premium and custom WordPress themes.

25. Offering Consulting and Related Services

Depending on your niche, you could make money by offering consulting and related services. If you are also the author of your blog, the articles and information that you will share will build your profile and possibly certify your expertise on that niche, making it easier to gain customers.

Chris Garrett used a similar strategy. First he created a highly influential blog on the blogging and new media niche, and afterwards he started offering consulting services to clients with related problems and needs.

26. Creating an Email List or Newsletter

Email lists and newsletters represent one of the most powerful marketing and money making tools on the Internet. They offer incredible conversion rates, and the possibility to call people to action in a very efficient way.

Creating a big list is a difficult task though, so if you have a popular website you could leverage it to increase the number of subscribers on your list.

Yaro Starak is a famous Internet marketer, and if you visit his blog you will notice that right on top he has a section encouraging visitors to subscribe to his email newsletter. Yaro generates five figures in revenues each month from his email newsletters, proving that this method works.

Creating a mentoring program related to the niche of your website could be very profitable if you manage to structure and promote it adequately. There is a wide range of media and tools that you can use to deliver the information, from text articles to audio and video lessons.

If your website takes off and becomes an authority on its niche, you could create a conference around it. Depending on the size of your audience, the event could attract thousands of people, and you could make money directly from conference passes and sponsors.

Search Engine Land, for instance, created a series of conferences that visit several cities on the United States and on other countries as well. The conferences are called Search Marketing Expo, and the tickets and passes cost thousands of dollars.

Vi lämnar frågan om vem som har rätt åt sidan och konstaterar helt enkelt att världen vi lever i stundtals är en hård plats. AdWords kan också vara en tuff miljö med hård konkurrens om populära sökord. Och visst, det går bra att köpa sig en topplacering, men risken är att det kostar en slant. Om du vill lyckas i AdWords utan att spendera allt för mycket behöver du vara lite smartare än alla andra. Här är tre riktigt bra tips som dina konkurrenter inte känner till!

1. Använd dynamiska nyckelord En svår engelsk fras som kan vara bra att lära sig är Dynamic Keyword Insertion. DKI tar sökordet eller sökfrasen rakt in i annonsen. Det är ett sätt att visa relevanta annonstexter för användarna och samtidigt använda en enda allmän annons för flera sökord. Alltså – om du gör en rubrik som ser ut så här: ”{Keyword:Kontorsmöbler} till salu” och kopplar den till dina sökord, så kommer den som söker på ”Stolar” att se ”Stolar till salu”. Om sökfrasen är för lång, syns ordet Kontorsmöbler. Det här är ett smart sätt att komma närmare den ursprungliga intentionen hos den som söker.

2. Använd Geo-targeting Ännu en term på engelska som inte har någon riktigt bra svensk motsvarighet. Den lokala annonseringen är än så länge betydligt större i USA, men även i Sverige finns det stora möjligheter att begränsa annonskampanjer till avgränsade, geografiska områden. Den uppenbara fördelen är att du lägger krutet där det gör nytta. Dina annonser visas bara där de gör nytta. Men en bonus är att om du begränsat din sökning till Södermanland, så kommer det att stå Södermanlands län under din annons. En hel extrarad, som tydligt visar att just du är det smartaste lokala valet.

3. Använd påhittade subdomäner Det svåraste till sist. Numera får man ju sällan meddelandet “404 Error: Page Not Found”. Det beror på att de flesta omdirigerar felaktiga adresser till en sida som faktiskt existerar. Men hur skulle man kunna använda det här till sin fördel i AdWords? Jo, genom att utnyttja adressraden som en del av annonsen. Låt säga att du har webbplatsen hantverkare.se och att du vill synas på lokala sökord runt Kalmar. Då kan du skriva in Din-lokala-Kalmar-hantverkare.se som adress i annonsen – även om det inte existerar någon sådan sida. Så länge du omdirigerar till en annan sida på domänen hantverkare.se kommer AdWords att tycka att annonsen är OK, och du har plötsligt fått en hel rad till att uttrycka ditt erbjudande på. Det är bara att vara kreativ!

Tre tekniker som på ett enkelt sätt kan ge dina annonser en extra knuff framåt. Bra för sig, i stort sätt oemotståndliga tillsammans.

SEO For Google In Five "Easy" Steps

A few years ago anarticle were written: Ten Steps To Higher Search Engine Positioning. The article was well received due to the breakdown of the core requirements for ranking a website being reduced into simple steps. Well today we're going to break it down into 5 steps. Is it even easier to rank a website today than it was a few years ago? More straight forward? Yes. Less time consuming? Not a chance.
Two things are necessary:

1. We need to know that our tactics work
2. We need to maximize efficiency so we're not having to charge our clients unreasonably high rates

And so we've developed processes by which we can attain maximum results in the least amount of time through carefully developed stages. While we are interested in all the major engines, it is of course Google that we spend the lion's share of our time studying (having never heard a client say, "I don't care about Google, just get me ranking on Ask.com.") Here are the steps we use to optimize websites (including our own) for Google.

Step One: Website Structure

The structure of your website affects the way search engine spiders see your site and thus, affects your rankings. I'm going to assume from the get-go that your site is in a position to be spidered and the internal links followed (i.e. none of the content is hidden due to poor development). This does not mean that the structure is optimized.

The way the code appears on your page affects the way the search engines prioritize specific content. For example, if your navigation appears higher in the code of your web page than the content then it is given a higher priority. The goal then is to make the core sections of your page appear higher in the code than the portions that are not critical to the optimization of each page. Generally the content area of your page contains the majority of the keywords and is more easily optimized and tweaked. For this reason, you will want the content of your page to appear higher in the code. This is especially true if you have image-based navigation.

The methods for doing this differ depending on how your site was initially built. If your website was built using tableless design practices (ideal) then the matter is "simple". Now, I can't get into all the details here as this is a huge area unto itself. There are many great sites, articles and forums on CSS that get into this area of structural optimization in detail and where you will find many helpful forum members willing to help out and answer questions. Or of course you could hire a professional developer who already knows how to do this in which case it will take a fraction of the time. This will depend on your resources, time and of course - whether you're a do-it-yourselfer simply interested in learning another web development skill.

If your website is designed using tables the solution is actually much easier though less ideal. As Beanstalk's Mary Davies wrote about in her article on Table Structures, with table-based designs the issue is resolved by simply structuring the cell layout in such a manner that the spiders "read" the content before the navigation and/or other, less easily optimized portions on your page. Knowing that a picture is worth a thousand words I'll resurrect the one used by Mary to illustrate how this is done.

We can see that a blank cell is placed above the left hand navigation. Because a search engine spider reads from top to bottom, left to right they will hit the top table (the header) and then proceed to the table cell down and to the left. With the vast majority of sites this will be the left hand navigation however, if the table structure illustrated above is followed this will lead a spider to a blank cell. The spider will then quickly move to the cell on the right which is the main content area of the page. It is only after seeing the content that the spider will move back to the left, crawl the navigation and then proceed down to the footer.

The Point Of This
The goal with site structure optimization is to create an environment where the spiders will crawl the most important (and most easily optimized) content as early on the page as possible. This will give increased priority to the content that matters most.

Step Two: Content Optimization

Content optimization is, for our purposes here, the optimization of the wording and formatting of the page and site content to maximize its effect on a site's rankings. There are three defining principles to this stage:

* Keyword density counts
* The formatting of content matters
* Overall site relevancy helps

So let's discuss these in order:

Keyword Density

Keyword density is essentially the number of times the keywords are used on your page relative to the total number of words on the page. If you had a page that was 1000 words in total and you used your keyword 100 times you would have a keyword density of 10% (this is way too high by the way).

The optimal keyword density generally seems to hover around the 3 to 5% range. Of course the optimal level fluctuates with the algorithm however it's been a long time since I've seen it leave this range. You will find sites that rank with higher and lower densities than this. Keyword density is not the only factor (or how easy would an SEO's job be?).

If you want to check your density against the densities of your main competitors there are a number of tools you can use to do this.

The Formatting Of Content

Content in header tags as well as bold, italic, anchor text and other formatting options increases the weight this text carries. Now, this doesn't mean to run out and bold every instance of your keywords in your content but rather to make use of this as you are trying to draw the visitor's eye to the important content on your pages. Logically enough, if you are targeting a phrase on the search engines then it is highly likely that you will end up wanting to draw the visitor's eye to these keywords periodically on the page. This is more about usability and conversions than anything else. If a visitor enters our site using the term "seo services" we want to make sure that they find this phrase quickly when they land on the page. This will make the visitor feel more comfortable and help them more quickly find the content they are looking for.

If a page we are working on has an overall keyword density of 4% we would target to attain roughly 25 - 30% of this in some sort of formatting outside of the standard of the site. That said, the visitor is more important than the engines and if doing this will take away from the visual appeal of the site then it is not recommended. We can make up any loss in other areas.

Overall Site Relevancy

The relevancy of your entire site is going to impact the rankings of an individual page. If your entire site is about mortgages for example, you're going to find it easier to rank for related phrases than if you have a general site with a single page about mortgages. This is because the cohesion of content among the pages of your site builds the overall relevancy of the site to that topic. If we think about it, when Google is trying to determine if a searcher if likely to find what they're looking for on a site are they likely to believe a site with a single page on a topic is going to give the searcher the information they're looking for or are they more likely to assume that a site with many pages on a topic is going to prove more useful to the searcher?

So we'll resurrect the overused saying "content is king". Many pages on one topic will fare better than many pages on different topics.

Step Three: Link Baiting

The next step (and an ongoing one at that) is link baiting. Link baiting, as we discussed in our article on the topic, is the development of content/tools/etc. for your website with the primary function of attracting links to that page or to another page on the site.

Link baiting can be something as simple as a blog where updates are posted on a topic that others would want to link to (you're of course going to have to market your blog to get these posts found so they work as link bait). Link bait can also be created in the form of tools, contests, humorous stories or cartoons, or really anything you can dream up that would inspire someone to link to your site. SEOMoz's Rand Fishkin managed to make his proposal to the lovely Geraldine link bait.

While most link bait doesn't inspire links being built directly to the homepage of the site they do work to build internal links which boost overall site strength as well as to build links to internal page which might themselves rank for phrases.

Link baiting is an ongoing process. You don't simply build some link bait, get some links and move on. The more often you develop content that others link to the more often people will visit your site, the more content they will find and the more new links they will build. You will also want to test out different methods for marketing your link bait: Press releases, articles, blog feeds, etc. People won't simply find your bait because you built it, you need to inform the world that it is there.

Step Four: Link Building

Ahh link building, perhaps the single most discussed aspect of SEO out there and also the topic shrouded in the most confusion. Do reciprocal links still hold value? Is it worth my time to post to forums from a link building perspective? Are articles really worth the time they take to write and submit? The short answer to all of these questions is "yes" but with conditions (isn't there always a snag?)

Never wanting to give advice I wouldn't take myself, Beanstalk applies a minimum of 3 different link building methods for each client. Now, exactly which methods we use for link building depends on the client, the type of site, and a number of other factors but the core reason that we use at least three different link building methods is the same for all: one link building method may increase or decrease in value with an algorithm shift. The sites that tend to skyrocket and plummet with algorithm shifts are those that use a limited number of tactics and thus aren't safeguarded against changes in the way rankings are calculated. Sites that use multiple techniques are better shielded from these adjustments. And so you are left to ponder, which link building tactics will work for my site?

The link building methods you choose now are not set in stone nor should they be. Should you choose to go with three different link building tactics and settle on reciprocal link building, directory submissions and articles you are not locked into this forever. I generally recommend getting some of the easiest out of the way first. Directory submissions are a no-brainer and should be part of virtually every promotion so they make a good first round. If there are a lot of related sites in your industry (say, if you're a real estate agent) then reciprocal link building makes a fairly simple second tactic to employ. Now, let's be clear on reciprocal links. Reciprocal link building is not dead but it has been brought back to what it should be - an actual vote for a site. A link exchange between the mortgage site noted above and the Beanstalk site would hold little value for either of us. The sites aren't relevant. That said, a reciprocal link between said mortgage site and a real estate broker would make sense to both the visitors and the search engines and thus, it is a good candidate.

So you've launched in with two link building tactics, let's assume you decide to try your hand at publishing and submitting an article next. First you're going to need to accumulate information and check around to see what editors are publishing and people are asking. This should (and likely will) lead you to forums. While you're there you might as well answer some of the questions people are asking that you'll be writing about. This is a good test of your material (but please, make sure your comments actually answer people's questions and aren't blatant ads - I visit a number of forums daily and nobody likes the ads and they don't stay posted for long). So you're in the forums gathering information and answering questions while writing your article (which has added a fourth link building method into the mix), now you've got your article published. The next step is to submit it.

A few simple searches on your favorite search engine will provide long lists of sites that publish articles, you'll simply need to create an account and submit it. I recommend setting up Google Alerts to email you with a random sentence from your article. This will allow you to monitor where it's being picked up and, of course, make sure the credits are in place.

So there you are, you've already employed four different link building tactics (and we're not even including link baiting in this total). From this stage you need to keep on each of them to insure your link counts continue to climb but you can relax a bit and move on to Step Five.

Step Five: Social Media

The use of social media for SEO purposes is a fairly recent evolution in the community. While the links from social networking sites themselves do hold value, the larger purpose of social media from an SEO perspective is the effect that it will have on personalized search results. I wrote a very length article on personalization and so I won't repeat all of the details here (if you're so inclined you can read it after this. It's titled, "Personalization & The Death Of SEO").

Now, using social media as a traffic and SEO tool is a highly specialized area. To keep posted on this ever-changing field I recommend reading Neil Patel's blog on social media marketing. In his blog he covers a lot more than social media as an SEO tool but I won't get into that in this article.

Aside from the links themselves social media holds one basic function for SEO's - building relevancy. Google, in their personalization-related patent applications, has been very clear that they will be looking at community and group similarities when personalizing search results. If I like site x then it is likely that if it shows up for a different search I will find it useful again. That is the current state of personalization. It is clear it is going to go further than this and evolve into a situation where the results will run on assumptions such as, if I like site x and my friend Jim likes site x then if Jim, on a different search, like site y - chances are that I will like site y if I run the same search. Now, this doesn't work well in a micro, two-person universe however when the technology evolves to the point where the patterns of millions of users can be analyzed effectively the results will likely yield quite significant shifts in rankings. But what does this have to do with social media?

Social media is user-based votes wrapped into communities. If I find a site worth bookmarking in Digg and another SEO finds the same resource worth bookmarking, and so on - soon it can be assumed that people involved in SEO communities feel that a resource is worth saving and thus, that result will - when personalization evolves - rise in the rankings.

It is for this reason that social media is going to be an important factor in the ranking of websites down the road. This makes today the perfect day to get started; you don't want to be playing catch-up to the sites that are currently employing social media tactics now.
Conclusion

So, as you can see, I was not being altogether accurate in the title when I called them "Easy Steps". The tactics required to rank highly on Google can be complex and time consuming however the path itself is straight forward. If you are willing to spend the time it will take to do it right, success is virtually assured. If you are not, then prepare to make way for those who are.

I just saw the promo page of the new video solution/player that AdBrite are about to launch for bloggers and webmasters who want to use video on their sites and monetize it. It’s called ‘InVideo’ (beta) and it’s got some features that have me interested.

Here’s how they’re promoting it’s features:

1. Lyssna mer. Du har fått en mun och TVÅ öron. Låt relationen styra hur du använder dem.
2. Hör av dig. Bestäm dig för att kontakta alla dina kunder minst en gång i månaden så de vet att du bryr dig om dem.
3. Tänk ordentligt på vad som skiljer ditt företag från andra. Varför ska kunderna köpa just från er? Inget luddludd här. Inget: ”Vi är serviceinriktade, förtroendeingivande, snälla och trevliga.” Var konkret. Vad får kunden av ditt företag som de inte får av andra?
4. Gör dig av med negativa människor i ditt liv. Det kan vara svårt om du är gift med dem men generellt ska du omge dig med människor som är stöttande och varma. Negativa personer förgiftar din värld, de river ner de bygger inte. De kan dra ner dig snabbare än du kan lyfta upp den.
5. Skicka ut 25 säljbrev varje vecka oavsett vad du har på gång. Gör det till en vana att göra det, till exempel varje fredag. Det skapar möjligheter med ger dig också en känsla av att saker alltid är på gång.
6. Tänk stort. För att just du just nu råkar ha ett företag där du är själv betyder det inte att du inte kan tänka stort och vinna stort.
7. Lär dig att alltid utvärdera händelser. Positiva som negativa. Vad kan göras bättre. Vad hände.
8. Sluta ”försöka” göra saker. Antingen gör du saker eller så gör du dem inte. Lura inte dig själv.
9. Tänk långsiktigt. Ha i fokus att hålla kunden kvar i 20 år
10. Ha förtroende för din idé. Om du har det får andra det också.
11. Skapa relationer snabbt. Etablera kontakt med kunder genom att hitta något so är gemensamt för er båda, barn, intressen, hobbies etc.
12. Ställ fler frågor. Folk vill veta att du verkligen förstår deras problem och inte vara är där för att sälja det du vill sälja
13. Sälj för att hjälpa till. Folk bryr sin inte om hur mycket du vet förrän de vet hur mycket du bryr dig.
14. Gör en lista på 10 saker du gillar med dig själv. Om du bara hittar 5 jobba till listan är full.
15. Beskriv en människa du tycker om. Hur ska du kunna bli en sån?
16. Sätt ett mål för det här året. Skriv ned på det på baksidan av ditt visitkort och ha det i fickan.
17. Använd referenser från andra kunder eller från tidningar för att stödja din sak
18. Passa tider.
19. Var kundens vän. Var ärlig. Göm inte undan nackdelar, det får du bara bittert ångra.
20. Gör det lätt för kunderna att lämna synpunkter på ditt företag.
21. Ha tydliga garantier utan liten text. Visa kunderna att du står för det du säljer
22. Fråga efter beställningen. Den enkla regeln är självklar för dig. Eller?
23. Gör dina mål personliga. Vill du ha en ny bil, åka jorden runt eller vara ledig ett år? Sätt upp viktigt mål du vill med det nästa vara något du vill ha tillräckligt mycket för att du ska föra de saker som behövs för att få det. Skriv ner målen och sätt ett datum för när du ska nå dit. Sätt delmål och håll dem inte för höga.
24. Jobba hårt för att nå dina mål varje dag, varje vecka och varje månad till du har nått dina delmål. Bär du når ett delmål, sätt dem lite högre vare gång. Att sätta mål är otroligt viktigt för din framgång, det för dig motiverad.
25. Bar inte något kunderna kan trampa runt på som de vill och behagar. Besvärliga kunder som ger dig ont i magen kan du göra dig av med.
26. Vägra ge upp. Det är bara den som ger upp som förlorar.
27. Strukturera och förenkla. Ha ordning på dina kunder, vad ni sa senast, vad de beställt och vad deras planer är för framtiden.
28. Ta ansvar för dina resultat. DU är den enda som kan förbättra situationen.

products are useless, and people just end up wasting their money.
In the near future to make money with Google Adsense you are
going to have to learn to drive traffic to your site without the
help of search engines. The 5 techniques below will show you
exactly how to get traffic to your website and profit from those
visitors clicking on your Google Adsense ads.

1. Find a topic you can create a two part article on. Write part
one of your article and place it on a page on your website. Place
Google Adsense ads next to your article. (Example:
http://marketingforrealpeople.com/joint-venture-ideas.htm) Next
you will want to create part two of your article and make sure to
make reference to your first article in your second article. Take
part two of your article and submit it to ezine publishers, and
article directories.

Using this technique, part two of your article will drive traffic
to part one of your article. In this way you will profit when
someone clicks on your Google Adsense ads when visiting the web
page that you have part one of your article on.

2. Create a site that is related to your market that has nothing
on it but good quality content about a popular topic in your
market. Make sure that you place Google Adsense ads on the site

How to Make Money with Google Adsense ? Here are The best Google Adsense Tips and Tricks for making more money (profit) from Google adsense program.

a. Strictly follow the rules mentioned in Adsense policies. You will always earn more revenue from Adsense by playing it clean.

b. Never modify the Google Adsense HTML code.

c. Don't ask your friends or visitors to click on your Google ads. Do not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. Don't label the Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements.".

d. Don't click on your own ads - Google is much smarter than you think. You should not reload your pages excessively. If you are testing your website layout with Google adsense, follow some precautions. Or you can use the unofficial Google Adsense Sandbox Tool that is accessible from Firefox, IE and other browsers to see what kind of Google ads will be served based on content (website address URL) or keywords.

e. Don't place ads in pop-up windows, error pages or even empty pages.

f. Don't start a "adsense asbestos" or "home equity loan rates" website merely to make money from accidental clicks (accidence). You will never make money out these "made-for-adsense-only" websites. Instead, write on topics what you are passionate about. Don't waste your money on high-paying adsense keywords lists.

g. For short articles, CTR is best when ads are placed just above the content

h. For long articles, CTR improves if ads are placed somewhere in middle of the content - visitors read the long content and then they are looking for more resources.

i. Use Text Ads instead of Image Ads as users get more options. If you still want to display image ads, consider ad formats that support image ads - Choose either the 300x250 medium rectangle or the 160x600 wide skyscraper - or both, if you display multiple ad units on a page.

j. Google Ads without background color and borders always perform better. Make the border color and background color same as your page background color.

k. Always put ads above the main fold. Make sure that the ad unit with the highest clickthrough rate is the first instance of the ad code that appears in the HTML. Since the first ad unit is always filled before the rest, you want to make sure that ad unit is located in the best placement on your page.

l. Try setting the ad link URL color to a lighter shade. If your text is black, you may make the adlink as light gray.

m. Go Wide - The large rectangle is the best paying adsense format (336x280) - The Google Adsense Publisher team also feels that the best formats are the wider ones - the ad formats that contain the widest individual ads. Try using the 336x280 large rectangle, 300x250 medium rectangle, or 160x600 wide skyscraper.

n. Placing images next to ads or above ads does help in attracting user attention.

o. Blend AdLinks with other navigation links or place horizontal adlinks at the top of your webpage. AdSense publishers are permitted to click on link unit topics on their web pages, provided that they do not click on any Google ads on the resulting page.

p. Organize an Adsense Party for your friends and colleagues - Request them to navigate your website, watch their activity - it will provide vital clues about which regions on your website draw more user attention. Try putting ads near those areas. (Thanks Darren)

q. You can put upto 3 adsense units on a page. Try putting a large skyscraper on the right navigation sidebar of your website. That area is close to the browser scrollbar. You can also add 2 AdSense for search boxes, 1 adlink unit and 1 referral button per product (i.e., 1 AdSense referral button and 1 Firefox plus Google Toolbar referral button).

r. The first few lines of your content are an important factor for determining what Ads are served on your webpage. That's the right place to put keywords in bold (strong or <b> tags) or header tags (h1, h2, etc).

s. Always select the setting to open Google Adsense search box results in a new browser window, so you won't lose your visitors. Click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox and this add target="google_window" to your form tag.(Yes it is allowed by TOS )

t. Maximum people think the search box is on the top right corner. So you know where to put it.

u. Don't syndicate full content. If people can read everything from the newsreader window itself, why would they visit your website where your ads are.

v. Use URL channels to determine performance of individual pages. I track my most popular pages with Google Analytics, Statcounter and create a channel for each of the URL. You can even track Adsense Clicks with Analytics

w. For low CTR pages, try changing titles or adding more content to get better focused ads

x. Block low paying advertisers with Filters. Why to loose a visitor for 0.01 cents. Use Overture or Google Adwords Keywords tool to discover keywords that are less popular with advertisers.

y. The AdSense for search Top Queries report shows you what your users are looking for, by listing the 25 most common searches conducted through your AdSense for search boxes. Use this report to identify additional topics to add to your site, or to keep track of your most sought-after information. Focus and improve that content.

z. Not everyone has a RSS reader. Use RSS to Email services like FeedBlitz, Bloglet or Rmail to let users subscribe to your blog by email.
